Ocean Cay has the best backstory of any private island: it used to be an industrial sand-mining site — basically a scraped-up wasteland — and the cruise line rebuilt it into a marine reserve, planting over 70,000 trees and growing new coral in a nursery just offshore. The waters around it are now a protected reserve, and there's a conservation center where kids can actually learn how reef restoration works.
Tell your kids this: this whole island is a rescue project — people took a wrecked piece of ocean and are growing it back, coral by coral.
The other thing that makes it different: ships dock right at the island and often stay into the night — which means sunset on the beach and a lighthouse light show after dark.
Set expectations on the walk off the ship: there are no waterslides, no pools, no splash zones here. This is a natural beach day — and honestly, that's the charm, but if your kids need a water park to function, tell them what they're getting before you arrive. The lagoon between the two beaches is the family sweet spot: shallow, calm, with platforms kids climb all over. Two practical things nobody mentions: shade is scarce and costs extra (loungers are free, umbrellas aren't), and the sand on the ocean-facing side has rocky, crushed-coral patches — pack water shoes. If you want snorkel gear, reserve it the day before; it sells out.
Safety's a non-issue — it's a small, contained, staffed island with lifeguards at the family areas. The real tip is about timing: if your ship stays late, don't head back at dinner. The lighthouse show after dark is the thing your kids will still be talking about at breakfast.
