Saint John sits on the Bay of Fundy, home of the highest tides on Earth — the water here rises and falls up to 50 feet, twice a day. That one fact powers everything worth doing: a river that literally flows BACKWARD when the tide comes in, sea caves you can walk into at low tide, and a working waterfront that looks completely different at 9am and 3pm.
Tell your kids this: the tide here is taller than a four-story building — and it makes an entire river run in reverse, twice a day, like clockwork.
One naming heads-up so nobody books the wrong tour: this is Saint John, New Brunswick — NOT St. John's, Newfoundland, which is 800 miles away. Cruisers mix them up constantly.
The ship docks right at the uptown waterfront; town is a 10-minute stroll.
The whole day here runs on the tide chart, so make it your first stop — it's posted at the terminal. The Reversing Falls Rapids (the backward river) only performs around the tide change; show up at slack tide and you'll stare at flat water wondering what the fuss is. Check the chart, plan your visit for the rapids window, and it's a genuine "whoa" moment — there's a glass-floor skywalk over the churn for a few dollars. It's a 10-minute, ~$15–20 taxi from the pier; agree the fare first.
In between tide windows, the walkable core carries the day: the container village of local food stalls sits right at the terminal, and the City Market — Canada's oldest — is ten minutes up with an indoor walkway system connecting everything, which is gold on a foggy Fundy day (pack layers regardless of forecast; this bay makes its own weather). The famous sea caves at St. Martins are 45 minutes out and tide-dependent too — magical at low tide, underwater at high. That one's a booked tour, and the golden rule out there is absolute: when the tide turns, you leave the ocean floor. It comes back faster than kids walk.

**The AREA 506 container village** is literally at the terminal: local food, snacks, and souvenirs in stacked shipping containers — the easiest first-and-last stop in Canada. **The City Market** is a 10-minute walk uptown, Canada's oldest, with a roof shaped like an upside-down ship hull and enough samples to count as lunch. **The Reversing Falls Rapids** are the short taxi ride — timed to the tide chart, they're the show; between tides, the skywalk view is still a solid stop.
King's Square park sits beside the market when small legs need grass. The whole uptown connects by indoor walkways, so even a rainy Fundy day stays comfortable.
