Set expectations before the gangway: Freeport is the port where the good stuff is NOT at the port. Your ship docks in a working industrial harbour — functional, safe, and honestly a little bleak — and everything worth your day is a 10–25 minute ride away. The families who know this have a great day; the ones who wander off expecting Nassau turn around and reboard.
Tell your kids this: the national park down the road hides one of the longest underwater cave systems on Earth — miles of tunnels below the island you're standing on.
Grand Bahama itself is the calm one: quieter, greener, and less crowded than anywhere else on a Bahamas run. The move is simple — pick your destination, grab the shuttle or a taxi, go.
Before we begin, this port is unique. When you pull up, you'll immedietly ask WHY DID WE BOOK THIS S*HOLE?? It looks like an industrial complex. That's why its imperative to book an excursion here. There are some really pretty areas around this port... Its like that really good book with a terrible cover.
One decision defines this day: Port Lucaya or Taino Beach. Port Lucaya Marketplace is the island's hub — shops, restaurants, live music at the square — with beach access a short walk through the resort gaps (heads up: that public stretch has no bathrooms or chairs, so it's a splash-and-go beach, not a camp-out beach). Taino Beach is the family play: calm, shallow water, an actual playground, food shacks, and way more room. There's even a little $3 ferry between Lucaya and Taino that kids treat as an attraction in itself. Shared taxis run $8–12 a head to either; agree on the fare BEFORE you get in and take the driver's number for the return — there's no rideshare here, and the return trip is the part people fumble.
The island is relaxed everywhere tourists go — this isn't a stay-alert port, it's a plan-your-transport port. One skip: reviews still mention the International Bazaar downtown; it's mostly closed and not worth the ride. And if anyone offers the "beautiful beach at the port"... there isn't one. Ride out or stay aboard.

**Taino Beach** is the family HQ: shallow, calm, playground on the sand, conch shacks for lunch, and enough space that even a multi-ship day doesn't wreck it. **Port Lucaya Marketplace** is the everything-else: 40+ shops, a straw market friendlier than Nassau's, waterfront restaurants, and free entertainment at the central square — good for the crew that's beached out. **Gold Rock Beach** is the postcard — routinely called the prettiest beach in the Bahamas — but it's 40 minutes out, has zero amenities, and only shows off at low tide; save it for a day with long port hours and a checked tide chart.
Whatever you pick, lock in your return ride when you arrive, not when you're ready to leave. That's the entire Freeport skill.
