Here's the truth — Nassau rewards a plan and punishes wandering. The ship docks right downtown at a big modern terminal, and within a 15-minute walk you've got a beach, 300 years of pirate-and-colonial history, and the famous straw market.

Once you're past the port plaza it thins out fast, and there's heavy police presence through the whole tourist core. The real rule for Nassau: stay in the main zones — downtown, Bay Street, the beach route, Paradise Island — and you're fine. Junkanoo Beach (the walkable one) has no lifeguards — arm's length with the littles — and enough glass in the sand over the years that cheap water shoes are a real recommendation, not paranoia. And if Atlantis is the dream, book the day pass before you sail; they sell out on busy ship days and the walk-up price hurts.

**Junkanoo Beach** is 15 minutes west on foot: free entry, calm shallow water, chair rentals, bathrooms, and the west end stays mellow while the east end parties. **The Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle** are 15 minutes the other direction — a 66-step staircase hand-carved through limestone leading to a small fort with cannons and the best view of your ship; kids burn energy, parents get the photo, total cost about nothing. **The Straw Market** is souvenir heaven for kids — everything imaginable with "Bahamas" on it, and haggling is part of the show.
The famous stuff across the water — Atlantis, the beaches of Paradise Island — is a water taxi or booked excursion, not a stroll. Decide before you dock whether that's your Nassau or the walkable version is.
