History

Here's the fun fact your kids will actually repeat: Juneau is a state capital you cannot drive to. No roads in or out — everything arrives by boat or plane, including you. It started as a gold rush camp in the 1880s, and the steep streets uphill from the dock are the original mining town, not a replica.

Tell your kids this: the Mendenhall Glacier is a frozen river half a mile wide — and it's slowly moving.

The one thing to get straight before you're standing on the pier: the glacier is not at the port. It's about 12 miles out. So Juneau is a "pick your one big thing, then wander" day — glacier or whales, downtown fills the gaps.

Parent to parent

Okay, real talk on Juneau: the photos make it look like you walk off the ship into a glacier postcard. You don't. You walk off into a cruise-port shopping strip — and honestly, a lot of it is jewelry stores. It's a fun hour, not a day. The glacier is a ride away, and the whales are a boat away, so decide which one is YOUR Juneau before you get there. Other thing nobody mentions: if a tour only gives you 90 minutes at the glacier, that's rushed with kids — the walk to Nugget Falls (the part kids actually love) eats most of it.

Safety-wise, this is an easy one. Downtown is compact, walkable, and about as relaxed as ports get — wander freely. The only real rule is the Alaska rule: outside town it's bear country, so no improvising into the trees. Glacier and whale logistics? Book them. Day-of scrambling here wastes your best hours.

What's the Plan?

Do you want a set-and-forget day, or are you winging it?

Either way — we've got you covered.

Set & Forget

This is the easy button. Every excursion below is built for cruisers — pickup at the pier, drop-off at the pier, timing that respects your all-aboard, and a day where the logistics are somebody else's job.

Pick one, click, done. Want more options than our three favorites? Everything at this port is one tap away 👇

Wingin' It?

Straight up: winging it in Juneau means downtown, because the famous stuff — glacier, whales — isn't walkable. But downtown is genuinely easy with kids.

**The waterfront Seawalk** is flat, stroller-fine, and gives everyone room to move after a sea day, with seaplanes taking off right in front of you. **The historic downtown blocks** are a solid hour — pop into the shops, grab fish and chips or crab legs near the pier (Juneau does port seafood better than almost anywhere). **The tramway up Mount Roberts** leaves right from the dock and is the classic easy win — but it's been closed for repairs recently, so check it's running before you build your day around it.

If the glacier or the whales are on your list — and for most families, one of them should be — that's a ride, not a walk.
