Salmon Capital of the World — a town on stilts, a creek full of fish, and rain that's part of the show.
Ketchikan calls itself the Salmon Capital of the World, and it's built like nowhere else — half the downtown stands on stilts over the water, including the famous Creek Street boardwalk, which was the red-light district in the Gold Rush days and is now shops and galleries hanging over a salmon stream. This is also the rainiest city in the country — 150+ inches a year — and the town wears it proudly.
Tell your kids this: from mid-July through September, the creek under the boardwalk fills with thousands of salmon fighting their way upstream — sometimes with a seal chasing them in.
One logistics check before you sail: most ships dock right downtown, steps from everything. One cruise line uses its own terminal seven miles north, which means a 15–20 minute shuttle each way. Know which day you're having.
First, the weather talk: it WILL probably rain, and that's fine — pack actual rain jackets (not umbrellas-and-hope) and the day works great. The locals call it liquid sunshine and everything here runs rain or shine. If you're docked downtown, this is the most walkable port in Alaska: Creek Street is under ten minutes from the pier, and the salmon ladder — where the fish literally leap up a waterfall — is a few minutes past it. Free show, and in season it's the thing your kids will talk about at dinner. One route tip from parents who learned the hard way: take the funicular UP from Creek Street and walk DOWN the Married Man's Trail, not the reverse — the climb up is steep and ends in cranky kids.
The lumberjack show is the classic family splurge here: an hour of log rolling, axe throwing, and speed climbing in a covered arena with heated seats — genuinely rain-proof and genuinely fun, even for the eye-rolling tween. Book it directly rather than as a ship combo and it's noticeably cheaper. If your ship uses the far-north terminal, build the shuttle into your math both ways — lines get long at all-aboard time.

**Creek Street** is the icon: a boardwalk on stilts over a salmon stream, ten minutes from the pier, free to wander, with the salmon ladder just beyond it (July–September, don't miss it). **The waterfront and Married Man's Trail loop** gives you rainforest, historic stairs, and creek views in about an hour — funicular up, walk down, thank me later. **The free visitor center at the pier** hands out a walking map with 60+ marked stops, and there's a free downtown shuttle looping every 20 minutes when little legs quit.
Everything famous that's NOT walkable — the big totem parks, the flightseeing over the fjords — is a booked ride. But this is the one Alaska port where skipping the excursion entirely still delivers a full day.
