Here's the thing about Victoria that changes how you plan it: on most Alaska cruises, this is an evening stop — often just a few hours, sometimes 6pm to midnight. Your ship legally has to visit a non-US port on Seattle round-trips, and Victoria is the pick. A lot of families see the short window and stay aboard. That's the mistake — this is one of the prettiest small cities on the Pacific coast, and the good stuff is close.
Tell your kids this: you're in Canada now — different country, different money, and the buildings downtown light up like a castle after dark.
The ship docks at Ogden Point, about a mile and a half from the famous Inner Harbour. Shuttle or walk — both work, and both are covered below.
The whole game here is matching your plan to your hours. If you've got a short evening stop, don't try to do Victoria — do ONE slice of it. The best kid-sized slice: the 10–15 minute waterfront walk from the ship to Fisherman's Wharf, a little floating village of candy-colored houseboats with fish and chips stands, a playground, and harbor seals that cruise right up to the dock. Eat, let them run, watch the seals, stroll back. That's a perfect evening. If you've got a longer stop, the shuttle (around $15 for the day, littles usually ride free) drops you at the grand old hotel downtown, steps from the Inner Harbour, where the Parliament building lights up with thousands of bulbs at night — a legit wow for kids.
One skip to know: the famous Butchart Gardens is gorgeous but it's a 30+ minute drive each way — on a short evening call, it eats your entire stop. Save it for a trip with real hours. Safety-wise, Victoria is about as gentle as cities get; walk anywhere in the tourist core without a second thought. Just bring passports off the ship — it's a border stop.

**Fisherman's Wharf** is the family move: a flat, scenic 10–15 minute walk from the ship along the water, with floating houses, kid-approved food stands, a playground, and resident harbor seals doing the entertainment for free. **The Inner Harbour** is the postcard — street performers, the castle-looking hotel, and the Parliament building glowing after dark; walk it (about 30 minutes) or take the shuttle. **The Dallas Road waterfront path** is right out of the terminal if all you want is a stroller-friendly leg-stretch with ocean views and pebble beaches for rock hunting.
If your stop is short, pick ONE. The families who try to do all of it spend the evening walking; the ones who pick a lane spend it making the memory.
