Belize's easy button — huge pool, killer splash pad, free everything... except the food. Pack snacks.
Harvest Caye is a 75-acre private island just off southern Belize — and it breaks the private-island mold in one big way. Instead of importing everything, the island runs on a partnership with Belize: the shops, restaurants, and staff are local. That gives it more actual personality than most private stops... and it comes with a catch we'll get to.
Tell your kids this: "Caye" is pronounced "key" — and just offshore is the second-largest barrier reef on Earth, after Australia's.
The setup is resort-simple: the ship docks at its own pier, and a mostly-covered walkway leads you straight into a giant pool, a lagoon, and a palm-lined beach.
Here's the catch, and it surprises families every single time: food and drinks are NOT included on this island. Because everything's locally run, your drink package doesn't work here, and neither does your shipboard account at the restaurants — it's cash or card, out of pocket. Don't let it wreck the day; just plan for it. The move most families make: big breakfast on the ship, water bottles filled to the brim, snacks in the bag, and either buy one real lunch ashore or walk back to the ship to eat — it's docked, so that's actually easy here.
Everything else is genuinely free and genuinely good: the pool is enormous with a shallow kids' end, the splash pad is one of the best in cruising, and the beach chairs cost nothing. Shade is the scarce resource — claim it early. Safety's a non-issue on the island itself; if you want mainland Belize (ruins, river tubing, the reef), that's booked through the ship only — there's no wandering off this one, which honestly simplifies things.

**The pool** is the centerpiece: 15,000 square feet, waterfall, shallow sloped entry for little ones, and enough loungers that you're not fighting for one. **The splash pad** sits between the pool and beach and might be the best free kid-entertainment on any private island — sprayers, dump bucket, zero depth to worry about. **The wildlife and butterfly house** is the shaded mid-day reset: hundreds of butterflies in a glasshouse, and it doubles as your escape from the sun.
If the budget allows one splurge, the lagoon rentals (kayaks, paddleboards) are calm, contained, and sized right for kids — or watch the zipline scream overhead for free and let that be the show.
