Barbados is the grown-up of the Caribbean — the region's most established island, birthplace of rum itself, a UNESCO-listed capital, and (your kids' angle) the home island of Rihanna, whose childhood street is now literally named Rihanna Drive. The ship docks at a deep-water harbour just outside Bridgetown, with a terminal shopping village at the pier and the city a shuttle or long walk beyond.
Tell your kids this: you can swim WITH sea turtles here — not in a tank, in the open bay, where they cruise right up to snorkelers like friendly dogs.
The west and south coasts are calm Caribbean water; the wild Atlantic east coast is for looking, not swimming. Everything a family wants sits on the calm side, close to the ship.
The turtle swim is the day. Carlisle Bay — barely 10 minutes from the port — is a calm, protected bay where green and hawksbill turtles feed over the seagrass and shipwreck snorkel spots, and every catamaran and beach operator runs trips to them. Two ways in: a booked catamaran excursion (easy, includes gear and lunch, best for littles) or the DIY version — taxi to one of the Carlisle Bay beach clubs, rent chairs, and snorkel out or take a short boat hop. Kids who can float can do this, and it's the memory that outlives the whole cruise. The water rule: look, don't touch or chase — the guides enforce it and the turtles reward it.
Logistics honesty: the pier itself is a shopping village, not a destination — don't burn the day there. Taxis run fixed posted rates (confirm before boarding, standard drill), buses are cheap and safe if you're feeling local, and the island is genuinely relaxed everywhere tourists go. If your crew is beached out, the Harrison's Cave tram (an electric tram through a huge cave system) is the best rainy-day or too-much-sun alternative in the region.
