Cozumel is the busiest cruise island in the world, and it earned it: a real Mexican island (not a compound) wrapped in some of the clearest water in the hemisphere, with the Mesoamerican Reef running right down its leeward side. Cozumel's secret is that the beach clubs solved the family day years ago: all-inclusive day passes at the family-oriented clubs get you pools, water toys, calm roped swim areas, food, and chairs in one transaction, ten minutes from the pier — the highest-certainty great day in the Western Caribbean. The snorkel-first alternative: the marine park at Chankanaab combines a walk-in snorkel lagoon (fish guaranteed, statues sunk in the shallows) with pools and shade — the training-wheels version of Cozumel's famous reefs, right-sized for kids.
Two skips to know: the ferry to Playa del Carmen eats 45 bouncy minutes each way and turns a relaxed island day into a mainland logistics exercise — save the mainland for a land vacation. And the bar-heavy party beaches on the north end aren't your scene with kids midday. One quirk that surprises people: the island's east side is wild, waves and current — gorgeous for a taxi-tour photo stop, not for swimming with littles.
