Bonaire is the quiet genius of the ABC islands — a tiny Dutch island that decided fifty years ago to protect its entire coastline as a marine park, and now has the healthiest reefs in the Caribbean lapping right up to the shore. The ship docks at Kralendijk, a two-street town so small and mellow it barely qualifies as a capital, and the snorkeling starts... basically immediately.
Tell your kids this: this island is a donkey island — hundreds of wild donkeys roam free, descendants of working donkeys from centuries ago, and there's a sanctuary where they'll stick their heads right into your (slow-moving) car.
No big beaches, no big town, no big anything — Bonaire's pitch is fish, flamingos, and donkeys, and for the right family that's a perfect day.
Set the expectation first: Bonaire is not a lounging-beach island — the shore is mostly coral rubble and rock, which is exactly WHY the reefs are spectacular. This is a water-shoes-mandatory, snorkel-first port, and if your kids can snorkel even a little, it's arguably the best beginner reef day in the Caribbean: calm, clear, protected water with fish thick enough that success is instant. The easy version needs zero excursion — several waterfront spots in walking distance of the pier have ladder-entry snorkeling right off their decks, with gear rental and lunch attached. Note the marine park levy: visitors pay a small nature fee (bought online or at dive shops) that funds all that reef health — legit, not a scam.
The non-swimmer day is the golf-cart-or-taxi safari: the Donkey Sanctuary (a drive-through where the residents mug you for carrots — toddler heaven), the blinding-white salt pyramids, and the pink flamingo flocks in the salt flats. Rent-a-golf-cart outfits sit near the pier and the island is flat, tiny, and impossible to get dangerously lost on. Everything runs on US dollars despite the Dutch flag.

Kralendijk is a five-minute town, so the wing-it day is really "pick fish or donkeys" — both are close and easy.
**Waterfront snorkeling** starts a short walk from the gangway: dive-shop decks with ladders straight into marine-park water, gear for rent, and parrotfish on demand — no boat required. **The Donkey Sanctuary** is the land-day anchor: a slow drive-through where wild-born donkeys lean into your cart looking for handouts, and kids narrate the whole thing for weeks. **The salt flats and flamingos** on the island's south loop are the bonus — pink birds, white salt mountains, and a coastline of impossibly blue water the whole way.
Golf carts and small rentals cluster near the pier and the island drives itself. Water shoes and reef-safe sunscreen (it's the law here) are the two packing non-negotiables.
