Two countries, one beach at the boardwalk — and yes, the planes are real. Watch from the sand.
St. Maarten's party trick: it's the smallest island on Earth split between two countries. The Dutch side (where you dock) and the French side share 37 square miles, no real border, two vibes — and your kids can honestly say they visited two countries before lunch. The ship docks at Philipsburg, and here's the rare gift: the beach is AT the town. Great Bay's mile of sand runs right along the shopping boardwalk.
Tell your kids this: this island is half Dutch and half French — cross an invisible line and the language on the signs changes, and so do the pastries.
And yes — this is the island with THAT beach, where jumbo jets skim fifty feet over sunbathers' heads. More on that below, including the part the videos don't tell you.
The easy day is genuinely easy: a $10-ish water-taxi wristband shuttles you from the pier to the Philipsburg boardwalk all day (or it's a 15-minute walk), and Great Bay gives you calm swimming, chair-and-umbrella packages, and lunch twenty steps from your towel. Beach plus boardwalk plus shopping in one footprint — with young kids, this beats every farther option and it's not close.
Now, Maho Beach — the airplane beach. Seeing a jumbo jet roar overhead on final approach is legitimately jaw-dropping and totally fine from the SAND, watching arrivals. The real talk: the jet blast from departing planes is not a fun photo op, it's genuinely dangerous — it has thrown people into the rocks and it has killed. The fence-hanging you've seen online is the thing you will not be doing with your family. Watch landings from down the beach, keep the kids beside you, skip departures up close, and it's a bucket-list stop. Treat those warning signs as decoration and it isn't. Taxi out is about 20–30 minutes; check an arrivals app so you're not staring at an empty sky.

Philipsburg is one of the few Caribbean ports where the whole day works on foot-plus-water-taxi.
**Great Bay Beach** is the anchor: right at town, calm and swimmable, with chair bundles cheap and the ship in view down the bay. **The boardwalk** behind it runs the full mile — gelato, beach bars, and people-watching that entertains every age. **Front Street**, one block in, is the duty-free gauntlet if souvenirs are owed.
The two-country move for a longer day: the French side's Marigot has a morning market and proper croissants a 25-minute taxi away — a fun passport-free "abroad." And if the airplane beach is the mission, go as a deliberate outing with the safety talk done in the cab — not as a casual drop-in.
