St. Thomas is the Caribbean's department store with a legendary beach attached. It's US soil — dollars, phones, no passport friction for Americans — with a duty-free shopping tradition going back to its days as a pirate-adjacent free port, and one beach, Magens Bay, that's spent decades on world's-best lists. Ships dock at one of two piers (Havensight or Crown Bay); both are a ride from everything, so the day starts with a safari taxi — the open-air truck-buses that are half transport, half rollercoaster over the island's absurdly steep hills.

Magens Bay is the move and it's worth the hype: a mile of calm, protected, gradually-deepening water that's about as safe a swim as the Caribbean offers — lifeguards, bathrooms, food, chair rentals, small entry fee, zero surprises. The safari taxi over the mountain takes 20–25 minutes and the viewpoint stop en route is the postcard. The alternative combo for fish-obsessed kids: Coki Beach plus Coral World next door — snorkeling where the fish practically pose, plus a small marine park with touch tanks and an underwater observatory. Either plan fills the day; don't attempt both.
The straight talk: the USVI's crime statistics are real, but they live almost entirely outside the tourist lanes — the beaches, the port malls, and the main-street shopping blocks are heavily trafficked and fine. Stick to those, use the marked taxi stands with posted per-person rates, keep downtown wandering to the daytime main streets, and the day is smooth. Sunday heads-up: much of Charlotte Amalie's shopping closes, which is one more argument for making it a pure beach day.
