Two ports, one rule — the free pool day at the pier beats the beach you'd pay to reach.
Puerto Plata comes with a plot twist: there are TWO cruise ports here, and which one you get depends on your line. Amber Cove (used by a few sister lines) is a resort-style compound 15 minutes outside town. Taino Bay (used by most everyone else) sits at the edge of Puerto Plata city itself. Check your itinerary — it changes your day.
Tell your kids this: this coast is world-famous for amber — golden fossilized tree sap, sometimes with 20-million-year-old insects frozen inside, exactly like the mosquito in that dinosaur movie.
Here's the good news either way: both ports have free resort-style pool complexes right at the pier — Taino Bay even has a free lazy river — so a great zero-dollar day is built in before you make a single decision.
The honest framing on this port: the built-in day is the best day for most families. Both compounds have free pools, free loungers, splash areas, and food — it's essentially a bonus private-island day glued to a real city. Neither port has actual ocean swimming, and the nearby public beaches genuinely underdeliver by Caribbean standards (grainy sand, seaweed-prone) — don't burn taxi money chasing them. If you docked at Taino Bay, the one worthwhile walk exists: the historic district, Umbrella Street, and the old Spanish fortress are all under a mile — a fun 90-minute wander. From Amber Cove, nothing is walkable; it's the compound or a booked ride.
If you leave the gates: taxis here are notoriously expensive (think $30+ per hop), so a pre-booked private driver or an excursion beats piecemeal cabs every time. And keep exploring to booked transport and main areas — this is a book-it destination, not a wander-it one. The famous waterfall-jumping excursion (Damajagua) is legendary but genuinely physical — a steep, hot hike — so know your crew before booking it.

**The pool complex** is the anchor at both ports: free entry, free loungers, swim-up bars for the grown-ups, and at Taino Bay, a lazy river that will single-handedly raise your children for four hours. **The port villages** handle everything else — shops, food, free Wi-Fi zones, and enough Dominican music and color to feel like you went somewhere. **From Taino Bay only: the town walk** — Umbrella Street's rainbow canopy, the pink Paseo de Doña Blanca, and the $2 fortress make an easy, photogenic loop under a mile from the ship.
Bring small US bills (dollars work everywhere; change comes back in pesos) and claim pool chairs early on two-ship days.
