San Juan is the walkable history jackpot of the Caribbean: a 500-year-old walled Spanish city, and your ship docks directly at its edge. Blue-tinted cobblestones (ship ballast from the 1500s — the streets literally arrived by boat), pastel buildings, and two massive stone fortresses guarding the sea. And because Puerto Rico is a US territory, everything just works for American families: dollars, phones, no customs dance.
Tell your kids this: the giant fortress here has 500-year-old walls, a dungeon, and a lawn out front where everyone flies kites — you can buy one from a cart and fly it where soldiers once stood watch.
Some itineraries call here in the evening — the old city might be the best after-dark port walk in the Caribbean.
El Morro is the day. The fortress is a real US National Park — rangers, junior ranger badges the kids can actually earn, tunnels and turrets to explore — and the huge grass esplanade out front is Puerto Rico's unofficial kite field. Buy a cheap kite from the vendors, let the trade winds do the work, and you've bought yourself an hour of core memory for five dollars. The walk from the ship is 20–25 gently uphill minutes through the prettiest streets in the Caribbean; with littles, the free trolley or a quick cab up and a downhill stroll back is the parent play.
Heat management is the real skill here: those stone streets radiate, so fortress in the morning, then chase shade — the courtyard restaurants do a mean mofongo and the local piraguas (shaved ice from pushcarts) are the official kid fuel. Old San Juan's tourist core is well-patrolled and comfortable, day or evening; standard city sense covers it. One skip: don't taxi out to the resort beaches on a port day — the old city IS the show, and the beach ports elsewhere on your itinerary will out-beach anything you'd reach here.
